Help and info for young people
In 2010, with the support of Scottish Women's Aid, a group of young people planned an event for other young people called Our Rights, Our Lives.
These young people came from organisations across the country, some were part of Young Carers, others were from residential homes, and some came from Women's Aid groups. After months of planning, and a great weekend away we held the event at Ratho Climbing Centre.
Over 80 young people and 27 adults came along to spend the day thinking about domestic abuse and children's rights.
Through workshops like animation, song writing, fashion design and urban art, children and young people thought about how domestic abuse can stop children and young people enjoying their rights. We wanted to find out how adults can make sure that all children and young people can enjoy their rights, especially those listed here:
Article 12: Children have the right to say what they think should happen when adults are making decisions that affect them, and to have their opinions taken into account.
Article 6: All children have the right to life. Governments should ensure that children survive and develop healthily.
Article 3: All organisations should work towards what is best for the child.
Article 19: Governments ensure children and properly looked after and protected from violence, abuse and neglect by their parents, or anyone else who looks after them.
Article 31: All children have a right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of activities.
Article 16: Children have a right to privacy.
