Domestic abuse: it’s not ok but it is ok to talk about it – support each other
Cathy Jamieson, Minister for Education and Young People, launched the SWA Listen Louder campaign in October 2002. Margaret Curran, Malcolm Chisholm and Jim Wallace also attended. The campaign aimed to give a voice to children and young people and to encourage government and others to listen to what they were saying.
We worked closely with children and young people to submit a petition to the Scottish Parliament asking for service gaps to be addressed and minimum standards ensured. We also published newsletters written by young people and multi-media presentations including an exhibition of artwork and writing.
During 2003 we distributed postcards, posters and education packs to every secondary school in Scotland. We also ran a ‘textathon’ with young people texting and emailing their support .
At a final event in 2004, children and young people used film, music, art and drama to tell politicians, policy makers and practitioners about their experiences and what would help to make things better. They also asked Ministers what they planned to do. This culminated in the announcement of a £6million award to improve services to children and young people across Scotland.
