In 2004, the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) produced a Joint Protocol outlining the procedures and practices that will be followed by the Scottish Police Service and the COPFS in relation to the investigation and prosecution of domestic abuse. The document was subsequently updated in 2008.
The Protocol identifies best practice and sets out consistency of approach in the investigation, reporting and prosecution of these cases, with a view to improving the service and response in dealing with criminal conduct arising from domestic abuse incidents.
