The pioneering history of Scottish Women’s Aid is to be recorded as the organisation celebrates 40 years of challenging and preventing domestic abuse in Scotland.

The project will record the work of hundreds of feminist pioneers who helped to bring about a sea-change in Scottish society, whose contribution has often been overlooked. The charity, in partnership with Glasgow Women’s Library, the University of Glasgow Centre for Gender History and Women’s History Scotland,  has been awarded a substantial project grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to conserve the unique and diverse heritage of Scottish Women’s Aid.

Recounting Women: New website now online

Recounting Women is a participatory photovoice project that supports women to reflect on, share and highlight issues related to their personal experiences of domestic abuse. The website provides a unique platform for women who have experienced domestic abuse and whose voice is rarely heard in public policy making, to anonymously and creatively share information about the issues that affect them.

Just released: Women's Health Improvement Research study

Every year in Scotland thousands of women and children are made homeless as a result of domestic abuse. Change, Justice, Fairness: “Why should we have to move everywhere and everything because of him?” is a research report on homelessness as a result of domestic abuse facilitated by Scottish Women's Aid.

History of Scottish Women's Aid

2016 marks 40 years since Scottish Women’s Aid was founded, bringing together a network of local Women’s Aid groups across Scotland. This ground-breaking movement brought about a big change in Scottish society by working to challenge and prevent domestic abuse.
We are holding various events to celebrate this important milestone throughout 2016. A special project has also been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to record and share the history of Women’s Aid in Scotland.
