2010
September 2010 saw 80 young people from across Scotland come together to participate in ‘Our Rights, Our Lives’ - a national event planned by young people, for young people. The event explored domestic abuse through the lens of children’s rights, something which has never previously been done in Scotland, or, as far as we are aware, in the UK. The project offered a range of ways for young people to participate, including planning the event, delivering workshops to practitioners, and participating in the workshops on the day.
Young people and the adults involved in the planning process recognised the need to engage with a wide range of young people that would include:
- Those who had been identified as having experience of domestic abuse, and supported around that issue.
- Those who may be currently living with domestic abuse, but who are not known to services for that issue.
- Those with no experience of domestic abuse.
This approach was taken in acknowledgement of the fact that there is a large hidden population of children and young people living with domestic abuse.
