Some good news! The Istanbul Bill receives Royal Assent

"We are so pleased to celebrate the fact that the bill on Istanbul got Royal Assent today. As you can tell from my accent, I am culturally hampered in my understanding about Royal Assent, but what I do know is that it is the culmination of an enormous amount of work from so many people.

The Family Cap and the Rape Clause: where now?

On Thursday the 13th of April we launched a petition alongside Engender and Rape Crisis Scotland, calling for the now notorious Family Cap and Rape Clause Policy to be scrapped. 100,000 signatures would have all but guaranteed a debate in Westminster, but before we’d even hit 25,000 a snap General Election had been called for June 8th and our hopes of securing a debate faded fast.

Scottish Women’s Aid, Rape Crisis Scotland, and Engender statement on the ‘rape clause’, ‘family cap’ and the UK general election

Our joint UK Parliament petition to scrap the ‘family cap’, including the ‘rape clause’, reached over 20,000 signatures in just its first weekend. This demonstrates the huge strength of feeling on this issue from people across the UK. In Scotland we have seen two large demonstrations, and statements of support from the leaders of four political parties, including First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
